Mulled wine has long been a cherished winter ritual; a warm, aromatic welcome that has gathered people together for centuries. At Mission Hill Family Estate, our own season begins each November as the Festival of Trees transforms the estate into a winter wonderland. Guests explore the estate with a warm cup in hand, the spices curling through the cool air, signaling that the holidays have arrived.

This tradition is an expression of our hospitality. Throughout the winter months, mulled wine is offered as a thoughtful welcome to many of our experiences. A small but meaningful gesture that invites guests to slow down, savour, and take in the beauty of the valley.

Crafted by Hand, Guided by Flavour

Our signature mulled wine is crafted by Executive Winery Chef Patrick Gayler, who approaches this seasonal classic with the same care he brings to every dish. His recipe layers familiar spices with unexpected nuances, a few “secret weapons” that deepen the flavour and elevate the experience.

For those wishing to bring this warmth into their own homes, we are pleased to share Chef Patrick’s full recipe at the bottom of this post.

Introducing the Farmstead Mulled Wine Kit

This season, we are extending the tradition even further with the newest addition to our Farmstead line: the Mulled Wine Kit. Inspired by Germany’s beloved glühwein, this simple yet elevated kit brings together the essential spices and ingredients needed to recreate the flavours our guests enjoy at the estate.

Designed to be both effortless and refined, it allows you to bring home a piece of Mission Hill for your celebrations.

Available exclusively in our Boutique.

Chef Patrick’s Mulled Wine Recipe

Ingredients

1 bottle red wine – we suggest the 2022 Reserve Merlot

100ml kirsch (Chef’s secret weapon)

1pc navel orange, juice and peeled zest

2 pc whole clove, crushed

8 pc star anise, crushed

4 pc all spice, crushed

1 pc cinnamon stick

500ml white cranberry juice (Chef’s other secret weapon)

100ml sugar

PROCEDURE

Combine juices, zest, spices and sugar in a medium sauce pot and bring to a light simmer. Allow to reduce by about 1/3 before adding in wine and kirsch. Bring back to a light simmer for 5-10 minutes then strain and hold in a thermos or serve immediately.
