For more than forty years, Mission Hill Family Estate has championed the Okanagan Valley’s promise as a world-class wine region. The deep winter freeze of January 2024 tested that vision like never before, yet from adversity came renewed purpose, global camaraderie, and wines that honour both our valley and partners abroad.
When our Proprietor Anthony von Mandl first looked across these sunlit hills, he saw the makings of greatness. Decades later, vineyards such as Border Vista rival the finest sites in Bordeaux and Napa, proving that conviction well placed. Every season writes a new chapter, and every challenge, including the recent freeze, strengthens our resolve.
Temperatures of -22 °C lingered for fifty-seven hours, inflicting severe damage on deep-rooted vines. Rather than mark an end, the event became a turning point. Trunks removed from the vineyard were returned to the earth as biochar, enriching soil for future plantings and embodying our regenerative approach.
Global Friendships
Great wine is as much about people as place. Over decades, we have built lasting bonds with likeminded growers worldwide. When the 2024 freeze threatened our harvest, that extended family stepped forward. Fruit from three celebrated regions will feature in a limited series of wines vinified here in the Okanagan at Mission Hill under the watchful eye of our winemaking team.
- Willamette Valley, Oregon – volcanic & marine soils, cool Pacific influence
- Petaluma Gap, California – California’s coolest AVA, shaped by coastal winds
- Marlborough, New Zealand – long sunlight hours, free-draining alluvial soils
The result is a collection that transcends borders while remaining true to our estate style. Precision, balance, and a deep respect for terroir.
Looking Ahead
Our heart and future stay firmly in the Okanagan. New vines are already taking root in revitalized soils, guided by sustainable, regenerative farming. Each bottle from the 2024 vintage stands as proof that hardship can fuel excellence.
