ANTHONY VON MANDL INDUCTED INTO B.C. RESTAURANT HALL OF FAME
Anthony von Mandl's ongoing dedication to striving for excellence in food and wine will be given formal recognition when he is inducted into the BC Restaurant Hall of Fame this spring. The contributions of this year's inductees will be celebrated at a gala event held on May 8th at the Vancouver Convention and Exhibition Centre's Parkview Terrace.
The Hall of Fame recognizes individuals who have shaped
British Columbia's culinary landscape. Mr. von Mandl will take his
place in The BC Restaurant Hall of Fame as a "Friend of the
Industry", a category devoted to individuals who have provided
exceptional long-term support to the restaurant industry in British
Columbia. He is honoured to be in the company of Jurgen Gothe, (CBC
Radio/The Georgia Straight) who will also be recognized as a
"Friend of the Industry." Mr. von Mandl has been eminently
influential as the founder of Mission Hill Family Estate in the
Okanagan Valley. He purchased the winery in 1981; under his
continued care and guidance the Estate has become an
internationally-renowned wine lover's destination that features an
award-winning outdoor dining terrace, a winery chef, cooking
classes, and a Director of Wine Education along with several
Other deserving individuals who will take their place in the Hall of Fame this year include John Bishop (Bishop's) and Bud Kanke (Joe Fortes), who will be recognized in the "Restaurateurs" category. Chick Chamberlain (Tomahawk BBQ), Jeff Mooney (A & W Restaurants), Jean Claude Ramond (The Smoking Dog), Joel Thibault (Chez Joel), and Peter Toigo (White Spot Restaurants) will be saluted as "Pioneers." The category "Industry" recognizes individuals who have demonstrated "exceptional professionalism" and made their restaurant a special experience for guests. Front of house inductees will be Francesco Alongi (Don Francesco's) and Ruy Paes-Braga (Four Seasons Hotel). For their work in the back of house division Chef Karen Barnaby (The Fish House), Chef Rob Feenie (Lumiére), and Chef Hidekazu Tojo (Tojo's) will be inducted into the Hall as well.
The gala event will take place from 5:30 to 10:30 PM on Monday, May 8th, 2006. A five-course dinner will be created by 2005 Inductee Chef Bruno Marti and prepared by Chef Blair Rasmussen. Dinner will be enjoyed with complementary wines including the Mission Hill Family Estate Reserve Chardonnay.
