The estate vineyards on the way to the winery are part of the province’s Agricultural Land Reserve, created to protect British Columbia’s agricultural heritage. They are also home to proprietor Anthony von Mandl. His vineyard homes open onto meticulous rows of Pinot Noir and Riesling grapes, overlooking Lake Okanagan.
Well protected from frost as a result of the slope of the land, the proximity to Boucherie Ridge and to the other homes in the neighbourhood, this is proving to be a very warm site with very good air drainage. In effect, it’s situated in a bowl, protected from the wind.
The first harvest from this vineyard, in the fall of 2000, surpassed all expectations of fruit quality.
This site is the only Mission Hill Family Estate vineyard to use drip irrigation. Appropriate in this case because of the soil type, which consists of deep topsoil with clay. Clay soil holds moisture better than sand or sandy loam.
At the winery, a small parcel of land has been planted with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Overlooking Lake Okanagan and nestled at the base of the winery’s outdoor Terrace, visitors can enjoy a glass of wine as they take in the natural beauty of the winery’s hilltop location.
