The site of Mission Hill Family Estate’s first vineyard and one of our most mature plantings in the valley.
A consistent fruit producer, the Oliver estate vineyards have borne an unusual concentration of award winning wines.
In order to protect the vines and the fruit from early spring or late fall frosts, 17 wind machines have been installed. The wind machines push the warmer air that typically forms in an inversion layer about 20-50ft above the ground down onto the vines. The result is an increase in the ground level temperature by as much as 2º centigrade, reducing the risk of frost damage.
Overhead irrigation systems are used here to promote ground coverage between the rows, helping to guard against erosion of the sandy soil.
