TOM KUNDIG,
LEAD ARCHITECT

Six years ago Tom Kundig signed on as lead architect for what he admits has become the project of a lifetime. After an extensive international search, Anthony selected Tom to transform Mission Hill Family Estate. Ironically, he found him almost next door in Seattle, Washington.

A principal with Olson Sundberg Kundig Allen, his experience designing galleries and museums, his love of nature and a sense of shared values with Anthony, sealed his fate. One of the Pacific Northwest's leading architects, Tom has won numerous awards for his private residence design. He has also worked with Stephen Holl on Seattle University's Chapel of St. Ignatius. In addition to Mission Hill Family Estate, his current projects include a church, a boutique hotel and an arts centre.

An undergraduate degree in Environmental Design and a Master's Degree in Architecture, both from the University of Washington, led to stints at firms in the Seattle-area and his own consultancies in Alaska and Switzerland.

Tom believes we are merely custodians of the land. When he visited Mission Hill for the first time, he knew that any architecture would be secondary to the landscape. He was thunderstruck by the region's pristine natural beauty and immediately understood that any building should only strive to complement, not compete with what nature had endowed. He is a proponent of second glance architecture. His hope is that visitors will discover something new and different with every visit.
